Cool, Wet Weather

June 12, 2008

We've been getting rain across the region lately (at different levels of severity) so just a reminder about effects of wet soils.

    -  Excess water in the soil and respiration of plant roots can quickly deplete soil oxygen.

    -  Corn is susceptible from early seedling stage to tasseling.

    -  Soybeans are slightly more tolerant for a short period of time.

    -  Wet soils are more susceptible to compaction.

Affects of cool weather across our area:

    -  We are 80-140 GDDs behind; which means about a week behind the average.

    -  Warm weather can still get plants growing and catch up to average/normal development.

    -  If temperatures stay normal and current delay in development remains with the crop, grain will be harvested later or wetter.
